WHAT IS THE BASICS3?
THE SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF
SAN BERNARDINO CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA, USA
The Basics3 is a comprehensive curriculum framework designed to meet the special and specific needs of students. In conjunction with the Basics3, the Diamond Learning Model provides a consistent language for use in describing a student's level of independence, successes, and challenges. The framework is a lifelong guide for students, families, educators, and community partners, and is designed to take students through their entire education program, from kindergarten through transition.
The BASICS3 framework is divided into five domains: Functional Academics, Domestic, Community, Vocational and Recreation & Leisure. Each domain is divided into Levels 1 - 6 based on students' developmental levels.
-
Level 1 is for students who are functioning cognitively from 0 - 24 months.
-
Levels 2 - 5 are primarily designed to develop student skills from elementary to high school.
-
Level 6 primarily focuses on developing a smooth transition from school to career and work readiness.
In each domain, the level 2 - 6 strands progress over time. The strands are developmental and based on progression of skills.
